Dr Smith, Roberta and Ellen say:

Ellen: Um… for one day. How long have I been sick, Mummy?
Roberta: That's right. Since yesterday…

We use for and since to talk about time.

Example

Ellen has been sick for one day
since yesterday

How long have you been in Sydney? Since 1999.
For 2 years.
married? Since 1994.
For 7 years.
a student? Since last year.
For one year.
a dancer? Since I was a child.
For most of my life.
an English teacher? Since 1985.
For 17 years.
living in Chatswood? Since February.
For 6 months.
