Jessica says:
Then I went home and in the evening Tim and I went to a great party. We had a late night. On Sunday we stayed home and relaxed . I read the newspaper and Tim cooked lunch.

Jessica talks about last weekend. The weekend is finished. She uses past simple verbs ( went , had , stayed , relaxed , read , cooked. )
When we talk about finished time ( last weekend, yesterday, before, last night, two weeks ago etc.) we use the past simple.

I usually stay home on the weekend. I stayed home last Sunday.
Stay is the present simple. Stayed is the past simple .
I/ you/ he/ she/ it/ you/ we/ they stayed

1.Regular verbs

Most verbs are regular verbs. We add -ed for the past simple tense.

Examples

Verbs ending in - y change to - ied.
I study English. I studied French last year.
Verbs with short vowels and a consonant double the consonant.
The bus usually stops at the park. The bus stopped at the shops yesterday.

2. Irregular verbs

Some verbs are irregular (not regular) verbs. We don't add -ed for the past simple tense. These verbs change in a different way to show the past simple tense.
