Philip and Maria say
Philip:	… You know, I used to have red hair too, when I was a boy.
Maria:	Really?
Philip:	Yes, but that was a long time ago.
Maria:	Well, I used to be fat when I was a little girl in Colombia.

Philip says
Philip:	…I liked to work with my father in his workshop. He was a carpenter and I used to help him make things.

Philip and Maria talk about the past - when they were children. To talk about something that was true in the past, but is not true now we use used to .
Philip and Maria talk about things that are different now.

Philip:

… I used to have red hair.

Philip had red hair when he was a boy. Now he doesn't have red hair.

Maria:

I used to be fat

Maria was fat when she was a girl. Now she isn't fat.

Philip:

… He was a carpenter and I used to help him make things.

Philip helped his father make things when he was a boy. Now he doesn't do this.
