1. Would you like…?

Peter and Maria say:

Peter:	Would you like a drink?
Maria:	Yeah, I'd love a wine.

Peter offers Maria something to drink. He asks, "Would you like…?"

Peter and Hiro say:

Peter:	Would you like something?
Hiro:	Yes please.

Peter offers Hiro something to eat. He asks, "Would you like…?"

When we offer someone something to eat or drink we ask:

Would you like a…?

Would you like an…?

Would you like something to…?

Would you like some…?

Examples

Would you like a lemonade?
Would you like an ice cream?
Would you like something to drink?
Would you like some chips?

2. Saying yes

Peter and Maria say:

Peter:	Would you like a drink?
Maria:	Yeah, I'd love a wine.

Maria wants a drink so she says, "Yeah, I'd love a wine."

Peter and Hiro say:

Peter:	Would you like something?
Hiro:	Yes please.

Hiro wants something to eat. He says, "Yes please."

When we want something to drink or eat we say:

Yes please.

Yes, that would be nice.

Yeah, sure.

Yes, I'd love one.

Examples

Speaker 1:	Would you like a biscuit?
Speaker 2:	Yes please, I'd love one.

Speaker 1:	Would you like some more chicken?
Speaker 2:	Yes please . It's delicious.

3. Saying no

Peter and Hiro say:

Peter:	Would you like a drink?
Hiro:	Sorry, but I don't drink alcohol.

In English-speaking countries it's okay to say no politely when you don't want something. Hiro doesn't want to drink alcohol. He says, "Sorry, but I don't drink alcohol."

Peter and Maria say:

Peter:	Would you like something?
Maria:	Thanks, but I'll have something in a minute.

Maria doesn't want something to eat now. She says, "Thanks, but I'll have something in a minute."

When we don't want something to eat or drink we say:

No thanks, I'm not hungry.

No thanks, I'm not thirsty.

Thanks, maybe later.

No thanks, I'm OK.

Examples

	Would you like a coke?
	No thanks, but I'd like some juice.

	Would you like a piece of cake?
	No thanks , I don't eat cake.

4. Saying something nice

Maria and Peter say:

Maria:	Wow it's a great party.
Peter:	Thanks, good to see you both.

Maria says something nice to Peter: "It's a great party." Maria compliments Peter on his party.

Hiro and Maria say:

Hiro:	Hey Maria, that's a nice dress you're wearing.
Maria:	Thanks a lot.

Hiro says something nice to Maria: "That's a nice dress you're wearing." He compliments Maria on her dress.

Examples

	You look nice today , Terry.
	Thanks.

	This is a fantastic flat .
	Thanks a lot.

	That's a beautiful ring .
	Thanks, I bought it yesterday.
