Maria:
Morning Philip. It's a beautiful
day!
Philip:
Oh hello, Maria. Yes it is.
I'm doing some gardening.
Maria:
Oh, I love gardening. My mother
used to have a big garden in Colombia. I used to help her all
the time when I was young. Do you want some help?
Philip:
Sure.
Maria:
Oh, I met your grandson yesterday.
He's a good looking boy.
Philip:
Yes he is. Everyone says he
looks like me. You know, I used to have red hair too, when I
was a boy.
Maria:
Really?
Philip:
Yes, but that was a long time
ago.
Maria:
Well, I used to be fat when
I was a little girl in Colombia…. Were you born in Sydney,
Philip?
Philip:
Yes I was. I grew up here
too. What about you Maria, where did you grow up?
Maria:
I grew up in a little village.
My parents used to have a small farm. I moved to the city when
I was a teenager.
Philip:
Well, Sydney used to be like
a village when I was a boy. Now it's a big city.So, why did
you move to the city, Maria?
Maria:
Because my village didn't
have a high school. I moved to Bogotá to go to high school.
I lived with my grandmother there.
Philip:
Oh, okay. Were you a good
student, Maria?
Maria:
Oh yes, I loved school. I
loved reading and learning. I wanted to be a schoolteacher when
I was younger. What about you?
Philip:
No I was a terrible student.
I didn't like studying. I used to hate school. I liked to work
with my father in his workshop. He was a carpenter and I used
to help him make things. I didn't go to high school. I finished
school after primary school.
Maria:
Really?
Philip:
Hmm… So Maria, do you
want to do some gardening?
Maria:
Yes, I'll just go and put
on some old clothes. I'll be back in a minute.
