UNIT 02 Different cultures TOPIC 01 Happy birthday!
Listening LISTENING 02 Peter's 21st birthday party
Hiro and Maria talk to Peter.
Hiro:
Hi Peter, happy birthday!
Maria:
Yeah, happy birthday!…Wow it's a great party!
Peter: Thanks, good to see you both.
Hiro: Here, this is for you, from both of us.
Peter: Thanks a lot. I'll open it later with my other presents. Would you like a drink? Beer? Wine?
Maria: Yeah, I'd love a wine.
Hiro: Sorry, but I don't drink alcohol.
Peter: That's fine; we've got a lot of other drinks. The drinks are over there at the bar.
Maria: Thanks. Hiro, let's get a drink.
Hiro: Oh great, I'm really thirsty. Hey, Maria, that's a nice dress you're wearing.
Maria: Thanks a lot.
Hiro: Hey, isn't it your 21st birthday next week? Are you having a party?
Maria: No, in Colombia we don't celebrate 21st birthdays. Girls have a big party for their 15th birthday and boys have one for their 18th birthday.
Hiro: So what do girls do?
Maria: Girls wear long dresses and have a big party with family and friends. Of course we get a lot of presents too. What about in Japan?
Hiro: In Japan a 21st isn't a special birthday. We usually go out with our friends or maybe we have a dinner with our family. People love to give presents in Japan.
Maria: Don't you bow when you give a present?
Hiro: Yeah that's right. We use both hands to give the present and we bow but we don't open the present straight away.
Maria: That's interesting. We usually open the present straight away, but not on special birthdays.
Peter: Hey, Maria, Hiro, it's time to eat. Would you like something?
Hiro: Yes please.
Maria: Thanks, but I'll have something in a minute.
Peter: OK, the food is next to the bar. Help yourselves. Oh, there's Mauro, excuse me...
