Maria emails Rose to invite her to the swimming championships.
She writes:
Are you interested in coming?

Are you interested in … is another way of making an invitation .

Here are two more examples:

I'd like to invite you to my party on Saturday.
I was wondering if you'd like to go hiking this weekend.

Are you interested in seeing a movie
at the weekend.
going to the zoo on Monday.

I was wondering if you'd like to see a movie at the weekend.
go to the beach on Saturday.
I'd like to invite you come to my party next Tuesday.

We use these ways of inviting when we don't know the other person very well.
They are a bit more formal than:

Do you want to……?
Would you like to…?
How about…………?
What about……… ?
