	Position of adverbs

Adverbs of time, place and manner usually go towards the end of the sentence.

We met them upstairs. (place)
Our plane arrived late. (time)
I don't want to move so quickly. (manner)

If there is more than one adverb in one sentence the usual order is manner, place, time. It is the same for prepositional phrases which give information about place, time or manner.

	Manner	Place	Time
They travelled	slowly	down the river	for a week.
We are going		there	in two weeks time.

Adverbs of frequency have different positions in the sentence.

1. When we use an adverb of frequency with a simple tense , it goes before the verb.

I always ta ke a credit card when I travel.
She hardly ever makes mistakes.
They never travel alone.

2. When we use an adverb of frequency with an auxiliary verb (eg have, is), it goes after the first auxiliary verb.

I have never had a complaint.
I will always remember our honeymoon in Paris.
I am never going there again!

3. When we use an adverb of frequenc y with the verb to be , it goes after the verb.

They're frequently late.
She's often rude.
He's always polite.

4. Adverbial phrases of frequency usually go at the end of the sentence.

The tour departs three times a day.
The weather was great most days.
They celebrate the festival once a year.
