LIVING ON THE EDGE

Do you like to feel really alive? Do you like to feel afraid? Do you like being in the great outdoors? If you answered yes, yes, and yes, then perhaps you would enjoy an 'extreme' sport, such as white water rafting, rock climbing or heli-skiing. These sports are becoming more and more popular. Of course they are all a little risky but they sure get the adrenaline flowing and the pulse racing.
Rock climbing and abseiling (going down a cliff face on a rope) usually go together, and they both test your strength and courage. To take part in this gruelling sport you must of course be strong, and you can't be afraid of heights. You also need to be agile. If you can move quickly and are light on your feet, you will be a natural at this sport. Most clubs provide the ropes, helmets and other equipment. You usually have to provide good climbing shoes and gloves.
Heli-skiing allows you to discover the beauty of unspoilt snowfields. A helicopter takes you up and drops you at the top of the mountain. You put your skis or snowboard on and off you go down the mountain side. Of course you must know how to ski or snowboard well and you need a good sense of direction so you don't become lost. Good ski wear is essential as temperatures, even on a sunny day, can reach minus 20 degrees C.
Another popular adventure sport is white water rafting . Most wild rivers offer a great ride as you paddle and steer your way through the rapids and boulders. You have to be able to swim and if you are unable to make instant decisions, think again about trying this sport. Take a towel and a pair of old shoes, and you will be provided with a wetsuit, a helmet, a life jacket and a paddle. Your guide will shout out instructions as you set off on your thrilling trip.
