LANGUAGE FOCUS 02 Describing emotions
This activity shows you how to describe your emotions - how you feel about different events or situations.

1. Adjectives

Jackie says:
Jackie:
…I felt quite disappointed . I mean, they can't sing.

Claudia says:
Claudia:
I felt excited when the lights came on and the boys jumped out of that box onto the stage.

Jackie says:
Jackie:
But after the first hour, I was pretty bored …

Claudia and Jackie say how they felt at different times in the concert. Claudia felt excited and Jackie felt disappointed and bored .
We can use adjectives like excited , disappointed and bored with the verbs to be and to feel to describe our emotions .

I was bored .

But most of the audience were 12 years old! All those young girls screaming and going crazy made me feel old .

When Jackie looked at the young girls, she felt old. The girls caused her to feel old. We can use make/made me to talk about how something or someone causes us to feel a certain way.

It us sad.
They them feel confused.

How was the movie? Oh, I felt disappointed. I thought it would be better.
Did you go to the lecture? Yes, I did. It made me very angry . I didn't agree with the speaker at all.
That test was difficult, wasn't it? Yes. I was shocked when I saw how difficult it was.
What did she think of the music? It made her feel very calm and peaceful .
How are your classes? Oh I am tired of them. They are very boring.

2. Verbs

Claudia says:

… the audience loved them.

Jackie says:
Jackie:
… I enjoyed watching the audience..

Claudia uses loved to describe the audience's emotional response to the Backstreet Boys.
Jackie uses enjoyed to describe her emotional response to the audience.
We can use verbs like love , enjoy , like , hate , to describe our emotional responses (how we feel). We use didn't mind when we don't have strong positive or negative feelings about something.

Did they have a good holiday? Yes. They loved the hotel they stayed at.
What did you think of the performance? Oh, I hated it. It was really boring.
How was the party? Good. I enjoyed seeing everyone.
That was a terrible exhibition, wasn't it? Do you think so? I didn't mind it.

3. Modifiers

…I felt quite disappointed . I mean, they can't sing.

Jackie says:
Jackie:
... after the first hour I was pretty bored .

Jackie uses quite to say how disappointed she was and pretty to say how bored she was. In these sentences pretty and quite are modifiers .
We can use modifiers to modify (change the meaning of) adjectives - to show how strong our feelings are.



Claudia says:
Claudia:
Why? I really enjoyed it. Didn't you?

Jackie says:
Jackie:
Yeah, I quite liked the dancing.

Claudia says, "I really enjoyed it." She uses really to say how much she enjoyed it.
Jackie says, "Yeah, I quite liked the dancing". She uses quite to say how much she liked the dancing.
Really and quite are modifiers . We can use modifiers to modify (change the meaning of) verbs .
