Ming:
Hi Lucas, come
and join us. We're just sharing stories about close shaves we
have had.
Lucas:
Hi guys! What's
that about close shaves?
Ming:
I was just telling
Jackie about something really scary that happened to me at the
beach.
Lucas:
I thought only
good things happen at the beach.
Ming:
Yeah, well not
always!
Jackie:
Mmm. Go on Ming,
you were trying parasailing, weren't you?
Ming:
That's right,
I was.
Lucas:
Err - parasailing?
What's that?
Ming:
You know, when
you put on a parachute and go up behind the boat.
Lucas:
I see …
Ming:
Anyway, I was
just beginning to enjoy the wonderful view of the beach and
jungle below, when suddenly, the wind changed direction.
Lucas:
Oh no, what happened
then?
Ming:
The boat driver
had to suddenly stop the engine and I dropped from the sky,
30 metres into the water!
Lucas:
Hang on a minute,
you dropped 30 metres? That sounds awful!
Jackie:
Yeah and the parachute
fell on top of you and you almost drowned, didn't you Ming?
Ming:
Yes
that's right Jackie. But luckily I managed to get out from under
it and someone pulled me into the boat.
Jackie:
That was a close
shave.
Lucas:
That reminds me
of something that happened to me at the beach…
Jackie:
Oh really, what
happened?
Lucas:
Well, while I
was on vacation last year, I was sun bathing when a local guy
came along with a horse and asked if I was interested in hiring
the horse for an hour.
Ming:
Are you good at
horse riding Lucas?
Lucas:
No, not really,
I'm a novice.
Jackie:
So, go on, did
you hire the horse?
Lucas:
Yes, and I planned
to ride the horse along the beach, near the water's edge.
Jackie:
It sounds lovely.
What went wrong?
Lucas:
I don't really
know, Jackie. Suddenly the horse just bolted and began galloping
down the beach.
Ming:
Oh no! What did
you do?
Lucas:
Well I just hung
on for dear life. I was terrified. I had never gone so fast
on a horse before. And there were lots of people on the beach…
Ming:
Oh! Sounds dangerous.
Jackie:
Yes! So how did
you stop the horse Lucas?
Lucas:
Well, before I
get to that, there's more…
Jackie
& Ming:
What?
Lucas:
We had galloped
almost half the length of the beach, with me shouting frantically
at people to get out of my way and at the same time shouting
at the horse to stop. But it wasn't listening…
Jackie:
So the horse didn't
understand English, did it Lucas?
Lucas:
No,
it certainly didn't! Anyhow, we were heading towards a group
of jet skis on the beach and I was hoping that would stop the
horse…..but no!
Ming:
No?
Lucas:
Would
you believe it, it jumped over them! And I flew out of the saddle
and into the water.
Jackie:
You
were OK, weren't you Lucas?
Lucas:
Luckily
I was. Just a few bruises, a broken finger and some strained
muscles.
Ming:
You
were lucky. That certainly was a very close shave!
