LANGUAGE FOCUS 05 Warnings and advice

1. Advice

Sophie says:
Sophie:
You had better be more careful from now on, hadn't you?

Sophie tells Mathew she thinks he should be more careful in the future.
When we tell someone what we think it would be good for them to do, we give advice .
There are different ways we can give advice.

Examples

You had better close the door, or someone might come in.
You should lock the window, or a thief might break in.
It would be good if you could get a dog. It would warn you if someone came.
Why don't you buy a watchdog?
I don't think you should go for a walk at night.
You shouldn't leave the keys in the car. Someone might drive it away.
You had better not go out alone after dark.

2. Warnings

We can also give warnings if we think someone may be in danger.

Examples

Be careful! There may be a car coming.
Look out! There's a truck.
Stop! You can't go in there.
