English Level 5 V 3
|
|
A report is a piece of factual writing (about
real things), often based on research of some kind. The purpose
of a report is to give
information
on a particular topic
or subject, so it includes lots of
facts
about that topic.
In a report we do not give our opinion.
|
|
We write a report in stages.
|
|
1. In the first stage or
introduction
we
start by saying what the report will be about - the topic.
|
|
2. In the
body
we write about the aspects
of the topic, or sub-topics. We write about these in separate
paragraphs
.
We introduce each new aspect or sub-topic with a topic sentence
followed by supporting sentences, which give more information.
|
|
3. Reports sometimes finish with a
conclusion
,
where we write a summary of the information in the body of the report,
or a statement that rounds off the report in some way. Not all reports
have a conclusion.
|
|
A report is
formal
and
impersonal
.
We don't use
I
Sor
we
(the first person).
We don't include personal experiences or examples, or give a personal
opinion.
We usually talk about people and things in general (e.g. scientists,
animals, cloning, research).
|
|
In some reports we do talk about specific people,
things or events (e.g. Dolly, the sheep).
|
|
A report is generally written in the present tense,
and the verbs
to be
and
to
have
are used a lot.
