This activity shows how to refer back to ideas you have already mentioned in your report. This is called "reference".

When we write a report, we often refer back to something or someone we have already written about. Reference is one of the ways we give our texts cohesion - that is, link our sentences together and make them one whole text.
Here are some common ways we refer back to things already mentioned. Examples are taken from the reading in activity 01.

1. Using personal pronouns

Point your mouse at the words in blue to find out what they refer to.

They is a personal pronoun which refers back to genes.


It is a personal pronoun which refers back to cloning .


Them is a personal pronoun which refers back to GM foods .

2. Using possessive adjectives


Their is a possessive adjective which refers back to all living things.


Their is a possessive adjective which refers back to another 1500 (people).

3. Using demonstrative adjectives


These is a demonstrative adjective which refers back to new procedures.


This is a demonstrative adjective which refers back to the content of the first sentence .

4. Using general determiners


Another is a general determiner , which refers back to people .

Some other general determiners used to refer back to something are each, every, other, both, either, neither .
